So I have a category of tags for recorders, microphones, type of recording (stereo, shotgun, ambient, etc), species (my anuran and bird tags are separate categories for example). And your tags can be broken into categories (customizable) and color coded. The program also has the ability to play audio files so you can preview them for tagging without exiting the program. It allows you to go through a folder/disk and tag individual files with custom tags.

My final (current?) solution is to use a program called TagSpaces (I use the pro version). I'm a biologist, not a computer programmer. but that rabbit hole was too deep for me. I experimented with writing a visual basic script that would read the file names off my hard drives and create a catalog that I could then tag with subject names, recorder names, etc.

In 2021 if they can't find a software protection solution than selling me a USB security key (for an additional price), it takes it off my list. And I don't like the idea of having to use a USB security key to protect their software. As Martyn said, Soundminer is the gold standard. Soundly allows some database functions, but it is really intended to sell you their pre-recorded libraries, not to catalog your own. I have searched and tested a variety of solutions and can't find a single one that works for me. I have struggled with this question since I started my recording hobby ten years or so ago and the recordings were piling up. Are there some recommendations? What are some workflows people are using for archiving their nature and soundscape recordings? Thanks! Robert There are others that are more focused on the catalog part (e.g. Lightroom seems to do a good job with cataloging digital images, albeit with a heavy overhead of editing tools. They seem a little cumbersome to use for nature recordings.
Much of what I have found was made for the music and effects industry. Reaper) have various levels of cataloging capabilities, but I would prefer a dedicated application that was quick/easy to use.even if there is a bit of a learning curve. It would be nice if it also allowed associating a picture or other media. I would like to be able to quickly locate clips I made years ago by searching metadata.
